This month we will be discussing Noli Me Tángere by José Rizal (translated by Harold Augenbraum). This novel delivers a poignant critique of Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines by detailing corruption within the Catholic church and its role in creating rampant social inequality. With the publication of this work, which was banned by Spanish authorities, Rizal played an integral role in sparking the first movements in the Philippine Revolution.
